US - Park City Utah
I’m a little sad. Park City ain’t the town I thought it was. Just like aspen. Great in ways for sure, but not perfect. Maybe I’ve already been to perfect in Telluride. That’s the romantic, but cool, but fun, and hidden mountain resort and town. I haven’t done Jackson hole so that’s still on the list as well…
Fletchers was so disappointing. You spend all that money to be in the middle of main st and your menu makes no sense. They may be busy for the rest of their lives, but only with travelers and first timers. Locals will learn quickly not to go, if they haven’t already.
Park City mountain is pretty rad boarding. We went in the late season and in the mornings I pretty much had the entire upper mountain to myself. Like literally by myself on the entire lift. Not a soul. The lessons were also fantastic. My 5 year old loved the all day action and came out a damn fine skier to be honest. The dining options seem more contrived than I expected. Why don’t these designers try harder? Some of them were closed for late season covid skiing, but you can just tell it wasn’t a masterful architectural plan.
We loved Handle. Just a cool modern kitchen. The chicken was a little dry but overall I loved everything.
Same with Grappa. The server was pretty outstanding which made the place feel special right from the start.
Both are must do’s.
The main point might be this, this town is pretty messed up if you have a kid. Half the places, and many of the famous really good ones, are 21 and up only. Like seriously. They serve food. The serve grilled cheeses and French fries and shit. But kids can’t come in. What on earth.
Can’t come back. There are too many better places that are definitely not in Utah.
Notes to self:
-It’s truly a dumb rule in the modern age. The kids see worse and more online every day.
-We had a friend of a friend advise us before we got there and even met up with us for some drinks. She was super nice and helpful but there’s only so much she can do in this town for a couple that loves food and drink, but also has a 5 year old.
Marriott Summit Watch - Apr 2022
Marriott summit watch (April 2022) is a 3 star hotel. The slope side Marriott is also a 3 star hotel. Are they bad? No, of course not. But I definitely feel like I’m at the great wolf lodge or an ocean pier hotel or something.
So yeah. Bad enough. Big problem though, the best stuff is at deer valley, and this dude don’t ski, so a mountain that doesn’t allow snowboarders ain’t gonna work. That dog just ain’t gonna hunt.
Our room was a suite and was perfectly fine. It was huge with a nice fireplace but it just wasn’t cool. It’s like an amusement park room. Not not not cool unless you know exactly what you’re doing. Our view was of jack shit looking at the awesome courtyard supposedly, but mainly it was looking at the roof below. This hotel has zero amenities that you would want from a ski village. It’s not what you want, and it never will be.
The pool at summit watch is exactly what you’d expect from a Howard Johnson. Great for kids, but kind of yuck otherwise. It’s not connected to anything so your happy ass is gonna walk in a towel through the game of thrones winter if you want to swim.
