US - Richmond
I like Richmond I just wish it was doing better. Everywhere you go there are empty store fronts and for lease signs…even in their “best” areas. In any case though, it’s old as shit which I love, and has nightlife areas with real character. Hitting Carytown during the day and the bottom and slip at night is not a bad day spent in Richmond.
Richmond is changing rapidly it seems. I’m not ready to amend the above yet, but I’m getting close
Notes to self:
-There are no good hotels in Richmond so stop trying to find one. Location and a bar is the best you can hope for.
-Um, they just opened the Quirk, and it is officially the first good hotel in Richmond. If they would just add porn it could be considered an actual modern hotel!
The Jefferson - many
It’s considered the best hotel in Richmond (I would say the Quirk is). It’s grand, it’s regal. It has a really nice restauran that I actually enjoy getting a martini at, but it’s just not that great. The rooms are not that great. The pool is not that great. Even the Christmas decorations are often just not that great. They try, don’t get me wrong, and during Covid I really appreciated them having room service, but now I just can’t see paying the required 500 bucks to stay in a pretty basic room. The rooms can be big, but they just don’t have much interesting stuff going on. The premium rooms do have nice bathrooms I guess, but every time we go with the kid we just don’t have anywhere to chill separate from her, even when the room is giant. Anyway, I just don’t know if it’s worth it.
The Moxy - Jan 2023
I don’t think so. Rooms are either too small, or big with no logic to the layout. No room service, no ppv, no mini bar. The lobby is more lively than any other RVA hotel, but this place is for young people and less discerning travelers.
Vampire room with no windows? No thank you.
Aloft Short Pump
I used to stay at this hotel often. But then one day they tried to charge me 250 bucks for smoking (I don’t smoke), and upon further investigation, someone, an employee, had illegally entered my room after I left and hung out in there. I mean scary as shit no?
Graduate Richmond - Jul 2017, and many more
I have updated this review to noooooooo. They just aren’t a very clean hotel anymore. The big rooms are maybe the worst because they are now overused party rooms. Still like the rooftop though.
Ummmm, this might be a new go to for me in RVA.
It’s slightly closer than the Quirk, but I think the rooms are much better. They are bigger, the bathrooms are maybe a little worse but still nice, they have mini fridges but they’re empty, they don’t have ppv, and room service hasn’t started. It’s Richmond nice
They will have a rooftop pool and bar.
Parking is easier.
I like this place.
Quirk Hotel Richmond - Dec 2015, and many more
Finally an actual hotel in Richmond. Outside of a few complaints, this might be one of the best hotels in DC as well (I am still waiting for DC hotels to get better). Reminds me of the great job they did with Hotel 21C in Durham. In any case, this place is modern, hip, cool, and popular.
The main entrance is expansive and beautiful. Lots of white and lots of plush materials. There is a little cute coffee bar right next to the front desk as well. The lobby bar is cool, but small. Mostly they have lounging areas that work really well. We didn’t eat at the restaurant but definitely would next time. We did have some pretty nice bites at the bar, including an oxtail egg roll that was sick as shit.
The rooms themselves had huge ceilings and windows that were not changed from the buildings factory days (think being on your tip toes and you still can’t see out), but they have steps that allow you to get closer to the not very attractive views. The beds were great and the bathrooms were cool too, though the bathroom door was one of those sliding jobs that don’t work so well…which can be shitty
They only serve room service for breakfast, but the mini bar and little dry bar was perfectly fine for us. There is pay per view but no adult action. Sad but true.
Stayed in a suite most recently, I feel like they are only good if you have a kid and need a separate room to hang when they go to bed, otherwise it’s just more stark space that’s too big to be comfy and sexy.
So the suite above is the only “true” suite with a separate bedroom (again though it’s basically just a bigger regular room), they also have terrace suites on the penthouse level, the 700’s.
**Terrace king room 704 is not private. The terrace is large because it also is shared with the bar. So literally people will walk by your room and see you naked :) But maybe that’s exactly why you booked that room!
The other terrace rooms are far more private but beware, the bar guests above you can look right down on you! Pretty stark rooms is the name of the game here.
Notes
-I mean this is a gigantic step up for Richmond.
-Had the brunch recently, menu is meh, service was meh, but I still like the scene.
-Balcony rooms are just not worth it. The balconies are kind of lame and sort of look onto each other.
Courtyard and Residence Inn - many
Business class hotels that are completely connected. It’s weird that they use 2 names at all. Overlooking the courtyard is best I guess.
Delta Richmond - many
Fine hotel. Pool is pretty small, gym is fine.
The view of the river is what you want here, plus you can park on the street really easily.
The studio rooms are just not good. Kind of big and dirty. The suites are actually ok and the ones in the corners have a semi separate living area. Tables suck.
Marriott Richmond - many
Totally renovating this hotel. It’s fine. Table is good.
Omni Richmond - Apr 2015, and many more
I like this hotel for 2 reasons, it is in a fantastic location right next to Shockoe bottom and slip, and it is one of the nicer hotels in Richmond…which honestly says more about Richmond than it does about the Omni.
I feel like the rooms are extremely comfortable with very plush beds. They do have modern pay per view but no adult options, which I think might be the case at every hotel in the city. They have a fine lobby bar and restaurant. They have a pool, but it’s indoors and slightly depressing. They do have a free shuttle that will take you a couple miles in any direction.
Valet parking is convenient (22 bucks), but whatever. It’s what you would expect but in a great location for going out at night.
They do have 24 hour room service and a decent mini bar. They also charge for business center internet usage…yup, they’re going to hell.
Crowne Plaza Richmond - Apr 2014, and many more
Ugh. While this place is just a few blocks from the Omni, those few blocks make a world of difference. This street is abandoned. Ghost town. There is nothing there.
The lobby is standard chain fair. The restaurant and bar is pretty far below average.
If you can, get a room with a high floor with views over the river…kind nice actually. Rooms service was weak and was not 24 hours. Pay per view was one of the old systems and had no adult. The hotel does offer a shuttle service in a radius of a couple miles but it ends at 11pm or so.
This hotel isn’t so different from other hotels in the Richmond area. If others are better, they aren’t that much better. When you are staying in Richmond, you’re in a world of hurt.
*Now the Delta
Four Points Richmond Airport - Nov 2016
Pretty crappy. Walls are thin and you hear everything. Rooms are old. HVAC is clunky.
Pool is comically bad. Empty mini bar. No PPV. No room service.
Plus, some dude called at 4am claiming to be the GM and demanding my credit card info because they lost it. What a bullshit scam that someone from the hotel must of been in on.
Fail.
