US - Savannah
I’m not gonna lie, this is a great town, and there’s simply not much to do. The squares are GORGEOUS but you can see them in a couple hours. The river walk is GORGEOUS but an evening stroll covers that base.
I just think one day can cover everything that is offered, even the restaurants IMHO because there is a ton of as you’d expect southern coastal tourist stuff (crabs and chicken and etc). You only really need to do one of those to cover that base. Choosing any from the below covers the other more specific restaurant base.
I really don’t mean to poop on Savannah. I absolutely adore it, but we came for 4 days and I found myself really stretching on what to do each day.
Maybe coming back for st Patrick’s would be fun, that’s supposed to be the jam.
Old Pink House
I would call this a must do. The food is what you’d expect southern but it was actually pretty good. Service was fantastic after an initial hiccup. They more than made up for it. Tour the whole building to really get the feel.
Goose Feathers
An old cafe style place. Good food and old school ambiance. Not gonna knock your socks off but fun just the same.
Husk
The food was great, and they certainly act like it. Our service was actually stellar, but the host just set the wrong tone right from the start “oh we’re fully booked” (we had a rez) “oh there is zero room available outside” well then why was half the outside and more than half the inside empty for the 2 hours while we were there? You can’t have socially distanced tables with 50% capacity limits, and have 50% empty tables while acting like your gods gift.
She really rubbed me the wrong way. First impressions right.
Don’t forget the “reservation” debacle at the on the rocks restaurant at the grand bohemian. They literally would not let us sit in any empty restaurant for 90 minutes because they said it was all reserved. Not kidding. An empty restaurant. It was the fucking twilight zone.
Same thing about the Perry Lane cocktail bar’s $17 Tito’s. I don’t know what he or they are thinking, but this bar isn’t anywhere near good enough for that shit, and the bartender thought he was the greatest thing on earth. Such an asshole. Seventeen dollars for vodka on ice, like it’s New York or Vegas. And the “arcade” in their is just a gimmick, thrown in at the last moment. Cramped, dark, annoying.
Squirrels pizza was really good. They have few options because they know what they want to do and they do it well.
We did also drive through Tybee Island and visit the beach. I could see staying here upon a return trip. It takes maybe 20 minutes to get there from downtown and I would stay as close to the main commercial road in Tybee as possible (Tybrisa Street). It is a golf cart compatible place but it still seems like it would matter.
Perry Lane Hotel - Feb 2021
What a rad spot. They’ve got the southern yet modern style fully figured out. It spills cool and charm out into the street.
Two buildings with the main one housing the lobby, the emporium restaurant with a beautiful kitchen (we loved it and breakfast was positively scrumptious), the coffee bar, and the roof top bar (another evening delight, perfect setting). The other building has a cool bar with some arcade action and a boutique shop.
The lobby building with all the stuff is where we stayed and is preferable.
We got the king suite and it was perfect. Maybe slightly small for this type of space but each room still had a cool style and the bedroom was totally separate so we got to enjoy ourselves fatter hours.
The bathroom was big and cool too.
JW Marriott
I should mention this even though we didn’t stay here. I don’t know if it’s fair to call the entire interior a lobby, but it’s rad nonetheless. I’m not some geode guy, but this collection is still very impressive and the whole layout is like a never ending scene of things that are interesting to look at.
Their bare bones rooms looked out into this atrium cruise ship style, and the complex is on the water so the river view would be preferable (city view seems suspicious as you are really only looking at the river street and you can’t see up to the proper city).
They also have numerous outdoor areas and bars along the river wall.
The JW really swung for the fences on this one and I think they connected. Very cool, BUT I am so much happier that we chose the Perry Lane, such a better savannah experience, and much more midnight in the garden ish :)
